How Retailers Can Protect Salmon from Pesticides

Salmon Hazard Warning Signs

Under a January 2004 court order, retailers in many Northwest urban areas were directed to notify consumers that certain pesticides pose a hazard to salmon by providing "Salmon Hazard" warning signs.

The affected urban areas are located where threatened and endangered salmon are found. Pesticide products that contain the following ingredients require the Salmon Hazard signs:

2,4-D,  carbaryl,  diazinon,  diuron,  malathion,  triclopyr BEE, &  trifluralin

How To Notify Consumers

This spring, you should have received a small packet containing small printed notices. The background is light blue with a graphic of salmon. The words read:

Salmon Hazard
This product contains pesticides that may harm salmon or steelhead.
Use of this product in urban areas can pollute salmon streams.

You can view and print out the Salmon Hazard warning sign:

To ensure that purchasers of products containing those ingredients are aware of the warning, the Salmon Hazard notices should be affixed to the shelves where these products are stocked.
