Fort Hall, Idaho - The public is invited to attend the Green Manure Potato Expo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 20 in Fort Hall. The event, sponsored by the Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides and Three Rivers Resource Conservation & Development, includes free educational presentations and community activities. The morning portion will offer technical information on green manures, crops that are mixed into the soil for improved soil characteristics, pest and disease management and soil fertility. Andy McGuire, Washington State University Extension Agricultural Systems Educator, will speak about his on-farm research program on mustard green manure use in potato production and three eastern Idaho potato farmers will share their experiences growing oilseed radish and mustard. Wayne Jones, University of Idaho Extension Educator, will discuss current potato disease issues and John Taberna, Western Ag Research crop consultant, will share results on green manure use in the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes' Alternative Cropping Demonstration. A free lunch will be provided. From 12 noon - 3 p.m, the expo will feature hands-on activities for community members to learn about the alternative cropping practice employed in potato production on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. Following lunch, activities include viewing microscopic soil life, creating artistic prints with potatoes, learning the potato varieties grown on the Reservation, and trying tasty, healthy potato recipes. Raffle drawings will be held during the afternoon expo. The morning meeting will be held in the Fort Hall Housing Authority conference room and lunch and the afternoon expo will be held in the dome room of the Tribal Administration Building.
