Third Annual Organic Farm Tours

The Idaho Organic Alliance and the Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides are co-hosting their third annual farm tours featuring organic growers in the Treasure and Emmett Valleys.

On August 29, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the tour will feature The Rice Family Farm, a large organic vegetable farm, and Granny's Farm, a small, intensive, organic herb and gourmet vegetable farm. Both farms are near Meridian. Attendees will have the opportunity to taste and purchase fresh produce such as melons, heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, herbs and more as well as, learn about the farmer's growing methods and ask questions.

On September 18, 2004, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., walk a ranch in transition to sustainability and get a peek in the window of life on a ranch. A sustainable beef, family ranching operation along the river near Emmett will take tour goers through a hands-on experience of pasture management, riparian care, irrigation, weed identification and animal management. Wear practical footwear and clothing! Jos Zamzow will speak after lunch about how to build healthy soil.

Both tours feature a catered lunch of local foods prepared by Richard's of Hyde Park. Advance registration is required. Cost to attend is $15 for each tour, which includes lunch and transportation, or $10 for children under 12 and members. Children who attend must be well-behaved and kept under the supervision of an adult.

For more information, chartered bus pick-up times and to register for the tour, go to http://www.idahoorganicalliance.com or contact Shelley Hawkins-Clark at ideasinaction@mindspring.com or 398-8920.
