NCAP is excited to present the Rachel Carson Award to the following individuals for each of our program areas:

Healthy Food & Farms Program Awardees:
Fred and Judy Brossy, Organic Farmers in Idaho

Judy and Fred Brossy have farmed 300 acres along the Little Wood River near Shoshone, Idaho for 33 years. For the last 20 years, their farm has been certified organic, which they credit NCAP with being instrumental in instigating. In 2005, the Brossys were able to protect the farm with a conservation easement that not only keeps the farm intact, but conserves over 100 acres of riparian corridor and upland habitat for wildlife. Over the years, they have worked with NCAP on various projects to promote alternatives to pesticides that have included several field day demonstrations and farm tours. The Brossys' commitment to developing an organic agriculture system that is environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable has not wavered despite challenges both anticipated and unforeseen. Their farm is a model for anyone seeking to farm more gently and with less impact on the world around us.

Healthy People & Communities Awardee:
Maralyn Chase, Senator and Pesticide-free Schools’ Advocate in Washington

Senator Maralyn Chase represents the citizens of the 32nd Legislative District in moving Washington forward with sustainable public policy. We recognize Senator Chase for her work protecting Washington children from pesticide exposure. The Senator submitted SB 6002, a strong bill that emphasizes non-chemical pest control and prevention to reduce pesticide use in schools through Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

Healthy Wildlife & Water Awardee:
Shawn Donnille, Vice President, Mountain Rose Herbs in Oregon

Shawn Donnille is co-owner of Mountain Rose Herbs, an Oregon based company that offers one of the most thorough selections of certified organic herbs, spices, and botanical products. Shawn led Mountain Rose Herbs in eradicating ALL conventionally grown products from its product line and going entirely organic, the first time such a commitment had been made in the herbal industry. NCAP joined Shawn on his 60-acre farm in rural Oregon to film the work he's done to clean up streams and waterways on his property that feed into the larger network of rivers in the Willamette Valley.
