Executive Director Job Description

ABOUT NCAP:
The Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides (NCAP) is a non-profit environmental organization working in a five-state region to protect the health of people and the environment by advancing alternatives to pesticides.  Founded in 1977, NCAP has successfully changed pesticide use policies and pest management strategies throughout the Northwest.  NCAP programs are currently focused on expanding the public’s knowledge of the hazards of pesticides and of the alternatives by establishing pesticide-free parks, working with farmers to build more sustainable agriculture practices in the Northwest, unveiling the secrecy around pesticide use and pesticide formulations, and promoting clean streams for salmon.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Executive Director of NCAP is a full time, professional staff person whose primary responsibility is to manage the operation and growth of the organization. The Executive Director is accountable to the Board of Directors and is responsible for carrying out board-approved goals and objectives; facilitating the work of staff and contractors; and operating the organization within the board-approved budget.  The Executive Director has primary responsibility for program development, fundraising, communications, and financial management.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Program Development (20%):

  • Work with board and staff to develop, implement, and evaluate innovative programs and activities that fulfill the organizational mission and strategic plan.
  • Build a strong and effective staff team that will integrate programs and projects and develop new initiatives as directed in the strategic plan.
  • Stay abreast of major pesticide reduction efforts being undertaken at the national and regional level.  Track current and emerging environmental priorities in the five-state Northwest region.
  • Be creative – identify and take advantage of programmatic opportunities as they present themselves.

2.   Fundraising (40%):

  • In conjunction with the Development Director and board, develop and meet annual fundraising goals to ensure the health and growth of the organization. 
  • Oversee the fundraising plan, and aid in the research, tracking, and writing of funding proposals to foundations, corporations, and government agencies.  Establish and maintain relationships with funders.
  • Approach, cultivate and solicit major donors.
  • Help to develop and broaden sources of funding for general operations.

3.   Communications and Outreach (10%):

  • In conjunction with the Communications Coordinator, oversee public relations, including media contacts and communication with members and the public.
  • Oversee the production of newsletters, printed materials, website, events, and the annual meeting. 
  • Serve as liaison with the conservation and environmental community, public officials, and related constituencies.

4.   Administration and Financial Management (15%):

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization.
  • In conjunction with the Financial Manager, develop and implement a board-approved, balanced annual budget.
  • Oversee financial management of the organization.
  • Plan and support staff professional development and team-building activities.
  • Manage the organization to attract and retain strong staff in key disciplines by acting as a leader, member, and partner of a team of professionals.
  • Supervise all staff and manage all contractors and consultants. Conduct regular and systematic work reviews with staff.
  • Maintain a dynamic relationship with the regional office in Boise, Idaho.

5.   Board of Directors (15%):

  • Work with the board to plan and organize all board meetings and conference calls.
  • Assist the board in the development and implementation of a strategic plan.
  • Work with the board, and board committees, to develop needed workplans, policies and procedures.
  • Serve as the board liaison to the staff.
  • Support and facilitate board leadership and development.
  • Regularly provide the board with detailed and accurate organizational and financial information.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to environmental protection.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven fundraising and grant-writing success.
  • Knowledge of, and experience in, building a major donor program and cultivating major donors.
  • Strong organizational and program development experience and staff team-building skills.
  • Strong administrative skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and manage finances.
  • Experience and ability to work cooperatively with a governing Board of Directors.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a broad range of people.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.
  • Four-year college degree.
  • Ten years of relevant work experience, including five years experience with non-profit organizations and three to five years at a management level.
  • Experience in communicating to and working with the media.

Desired (a plus but not must):

  • Knowledge of pesticide hazards and alternatives.
  • Experience in utilizing litigation as a tool to further specific environmental policy goals.
  • Experience in mediation/conflict resolution.
  • Experience in pursuing legislative strategies to achieve public policy and environmental change.
  • Ability to research complex issues and information.

LOCATION: Eugene, Oregon

COMPENSATION: Salary range $60,000-$68,000.  Excellent benefits (amounting to an average of 21% of salary), including paid vacation, sick and family leave, health (including family) and dental plans, and a retirement plan.
