Thank you, groundskeepers!

In response to ‘dandelion-gate,’ when senators spent over 20 minutes discussing and complaining about the presence of dandelions on the Olympia Capitol Campus grounds, we’ve written a thank you note to the hardworking grounds crew staff. They have been trying so hard to keep up with all the spring flowers without using pesticides! The Capitol crew has been experimenting with natural and sustainable landscaping, including organic weed control, repurposed compost and leaves used to enrich and activate soils, cardboard and wood chip layers used to suppress unwanted growth, and planting drought tolerate native plants for habitat. These changes make the area a safe and healthy environment for everyone!

Please sign this virtual thank you card and share with friends on social media. We will collect signatures until May 8, 2017 and then deliver to the groundskeeping staff.

dandeliontycard.jpgThe Capitol campus is noticeably full of spring flowers, healthy grass and historic trees!

We appreciate the hard work of the campus grounds crew and the landscapers, horticulturists, arborists, weed pullers, garbage collectors, custodians, and all the workers who take care of Olympia’s incredible and picturesque campus grounds.

Your natural and sustainable efforts make the area a safe and healthy environment for everyone–from senators to pollinators to kids to fish downstream. We appreciate your forward thinking, implementing new landscaping and turf care that reflects our values to end a reliance on harmful chemical pesticides.

Thank you to the hardworking crew at the capitol!

Dandelions are actually very important to Bee health. It is their first food coming out of winter. I let the flowers bloom then pick them before they seed. Once we have sunshine I spray with white vinegar. I do this periodically throughout the spring and summer once the Bees have other flowers to feed on. I care about the Bees and Butterflies!

Joe Davenport: I’m outraged that you as elected officials can get away with this sort of stunt to avoid doing your primary duty. If the workers at Enterprise Services acted like the GOP caucus just did they would face discipline AND possible criminal charges for failing to do their job. Those men and women and all the other line staff of this state understand what work is-go do yours.

Thank you everyone! Pesticide and fertilizer runoff from lawn care pollutes our watersheds, harms wildlife, and can overwhelm water treatment facilities during spring. The world would be a little cleaner and safer for humans and wildlife if we learned to tolerate a few extra dandelions. I think it’s great that the grounds crew in Olympia are trying out more eco-friendly approaches, even though these approaches often require extra work. Thanks for doing this. Thanks for thinking about the environment.

Dandelions for centuries have been eaten, we need to change our approach in what we deem harmful weeds. Thank you for not using pesticides.

The Capitol Campus never looked better. Some senators would do well to clean up their own house before criticizing the work of these dedicated members.

The Capital grounds look beautiful! I think the grounds crew, horticulturist, arborist , landscapers, etc. should get a standing ovation for the hard work they do. Their out working in rain and in the cold, and they still do a great job. I’ve been there several times and it’s a beautiful setting. I applaud them all.
