2010 Organic Field Day Series
Wednesday, July 28, 9 am – 1 pm
M&M Heath Farms, Buhl, Idaho
Mike Heath is a leader in organic agriculture in Idaho. He has been farming organically for 28 years and currently runs 450 acres of certified organic production. He produces dry beans, grains, potatoes, hay, tomatoes, winter and summer squash, and a variety of other vegetables, as well as livestock. This tour will feature his various potato varieties, dry beans, Austrian winter pea seed crop, new alfalfa stand, and squash, as well as his planters, cultivators and other equipment. Heath will also describe his participation in the Farm Bill EQIP-Organic Initiative through the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Monday, August 9, 6 - 8 pm
LadyBird Farms, Pocatello, Idaho
Jessica McAleese, Chelsey Robison, and Jeremy Shreve are in their third year of production on their one-acre farm. This Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm focuses on direct marketing to subscribers, who receive a share of produce each week. The tour will feature hoop houses for season extension, a drip tape and black infrared-transmitting (IRT) plastic mulch system for melon production, a walkable mulch for controlling weeds in borders, and a bicycle-powered salad spinner.

Tuesday, August 10, 9:30 am - 1 pm
Lozier Farm, Soda Springs, Idaho
Pat Lozier focuses on building his soil through cover cropping. He has grown a tremendous variety, including clovers, safflower, mustard, vetch, alfalfa, triticale, barley, wheat, and oats. He is always trying something new. This summer he has test plots for sorghum and Sudan grass. This tour will feature his soil building practices; potato, hay, and oat production; and his Lilliston cultivator.

Thursday, August 26, 8:00 am - 12:30 pm
Sweet Valley Organics, Sweet, Idaho
Chris Florence and Chance Morgan are in their third year of organic vegetable production. Florence turned to farming after 12 years as a chef in restaurants across the West. Sweet Valley Organics grows a variety of vegetables and processes their surplus tomatoes at the University of Idaho’s Caldwell Food Technology Center. They also wild harvest and distribute morels and other mushrooms. This tour will feature their mixed-vegetable production, geothermal greenhouse, and hot water piping system used to heat outdoor vegetable beds.
