Food and Fun in the Field, Recap
This month, NCAP brought together farmers and partner groups to promote sustainable agriculture and conservation. Meeting at the Berggren Demonstration Farm, a beautiful riverside property managed by McKenzie River Trust and partners, our shared goal was to raise awareness about the environmental stewardship incentives available to farmers. Of course, we managed to have some fun as well.
Over barbeque and local brew, staff from
the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Eugene Water & Electric
Board, and Cascade Pacific Resource Conservation and Development spoke
and took questions about the various environmental and energy
conservation programs they offer. Farmer Jim Bronec of Praying Mantis
Farm then shared his experience with some of these and similar programs.
As one who went to Washington, D.C. earlier this year to speak to congress, Bronec
also highlighted the importance of defending these crucial incentives
from budget cuts targeting the environment. Finally, Dan Whelan offered
his perspective from the offices of Senator Jeff Merkley, also pointing
to the importance of communicating the value of these programs to our
elected officials.
