In 2008, the University of Idaho launched its organic cropping system research on 11 acres at the Kimberly Research & Extension Center. Since its inception, University of Idaho researchers have grown certified organic winter wheat, alfalfa, potatoes, dry beans, sorghum-Sudangrass, spring and winter barley seed, winter wheat seed, and dry bean seed.
Research projects on the certified organic acres have focused on organic potato fertility management, potato variety trials, and Colorado potato beetle management.
Additional research relevant to organic production is underway at the Kimberly R&E Center and area farms, including cover crop variety trials on high-desert farms, on-farm composting, nutrient analysis of cover crops, biological control for white mold in dry beans, and biological control of potato virus Y.
