Organic Field Days 2011: Joslin Farms/Nature's Harmony Organic Dairy
A recap from NCAP's final Organic Field Day of 2011.
For the final field day of 2011, NCAP gathered with around 50 farmers
to tour Joslin Farms and Nature's Harmony Organic Dairy. As neighboring
organic farms, the two work closely with each other.
Joslin Farms produces
barley, silage corn, and dry beans. They also grow alfalfa, much of
which goes to the dairy next door. This alfalfa also helps with weed control,
according to the farm's owner, Karl Joslin. During the walkthrough, our discussion focused much on maintaining soil fertility through rotation and composting.
Nature's
Harmony Organic Dairy is a Jersey/Holstein operation that first started
milking in 2008. It was designed and built to facilitate pasture
grazing. The dairy's owner, Sean Mallett, works with local farmers like
Karl Joslin to obtain additional feeds.
Thanks to everyone who attended this year's Organic Field Days, and especially to the farmers who hosted us. We hope to see you all again next summer!
