Toxic Strawberries: The Latest on Methyl Iodide

On Tuesday, U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (CA) expressed her concern about the dangers that methyl iodide poses to farmworkers and pregnant women. Urging federal action, Feinstein has called upon the EPA to reconsider its decision to approve the chemical as a replacement for bromethane pesticides (methyl bromide). The same day, Pesticide Action Network declared that the EPA intends to host another public comment period on methyl iodide, but no news of this has yet issued from the EPA. All this comes on the heels of a highly contested proposal by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation to approve methyl iodide for use on fruit crops.
