Senate Amendments to the Farm Bill: The Good and The Bad

What you should know about several forthcoming Food and Farm Bill amendments.

The Good

Soon, Senators Coburn (R-OK) and Durbin (D-IL) will introduce an amendment that for the first time limits crop insurance subsidies for the wealthiest farmers, and Senator Cardin (D-MD) will introduce an amendment that reattaches basic conservation requirements to crop insurance, as was the case until 1996.  Please support these two efforts. 


The Bad
Mike Johanns (R-NE) has introduced an amendment that would revive the so called Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act. This failed bill from last year aims to eliminate Clean Water Act permitting requirements for pesticide applications. Please oppose this effort.

Tell your Senators: 

Please support the Coburn-Durbin amendment, which places long-overdue limits on crop insurance subsidies -- America’s largest farm subsidy – and builds on the current reforms that cap commodity payments in the farm bill. 

Please support the Cardin amendment on conservation compliance, which reattaches important conservation requirements to crop insurance, as it was until 1996.

Please oppose the Johanns amendment which would increase pesticide pollution and eliminate crucial environmental protections outlined within the Clean Water Act.
