Want to help keep Puget Sound clean, and encourage your neighbors to use fewer pesticides? We're seeking Water Stewards from Central Puget Sound! If you live in King, Snohomish, Pierce or Kitsap County, do not use or have reduced your chemical pesticide use, and want to get others in your community to do the same to protect their health and the health of Puget Sound—we want you!

Central Puget Sound Water Stewards is a community campaign focused on keeping chemical pesticides from entering Puget Sound, by engaging community members on alternative yard care practices. We want you to talk with your neighbors and friends about using less pesticides in their yards! This campaign includes community organizations, cities, counties, watershed management organizations and watershed districts.

What will you do?

Water stewards will be asked to participate in:

• One 50 minute online training. The training will cover:
  • Impacts of chemical pesticides on human health and water quality
  • How to handle common home, garden, and lawn weeds and pests using non-toxic alternatives
  • How to talk with neighbors/community members about yard care practices
• After viewing the training video, you must complete this brief survey
• For the next month after the training, you will be expected to make contact with roughly 10 community members via door-to-door canvassing, participation in community meetings or events:
  • Talk with neighbors and friends about what you learned about pesticide harms and safer alternatives
  • Share handout showing how they can reduce/eliminate pesticide use, plus give away some fun NCAP freebies
  • Ask residents to make a pesticide-free pledge and sign up for NCAP emails- get at least 5 signups

What will you get?

Those who view the entire training video and do outreach to get 5+ community members signed up with NCAP will receive a $25 gift card of their choice from Starbucks, Fred Meyer, Speedway Gas, Chipotle, Petco or Dominos Pizza. Water stewards will also receive an NCAP shirt or beanie hat.

Why is this important?

Some of the most commonly used chemical lawn care products have been linked with serious health and environmental problems. Glyphosate—the active ingredient in Roundup weedkiller—has been routinely in the news because of lawsuits claiming it is cancer causing. Popular "weed and feed" products found at the hardware store can contain toxic pesticides including 2,4-D, as well as chemical fertilizers that can cause liver problems and nerve damage in humans and other animals as well as water contamination.

Defensores del Agua de Puget Sound Central

NCAP está buscando Defensores del Agua (“Water Stewards”) en Puget Sound Central. Si usted vive en los condados de King, Snohomish, Pierce o Kitsap, no usa o ha reducido el uso de pesticidas químicos, y quiere que el resto de su comunidad haga lo mismo—¡lo necesitamos!

Defensores del Agua de Puget Sound Central es una campaña enfocada en mantener los pesticidas químicos fuera de Puget Sound a través del alcance con la comunidad sobre prácticas alternativas de jardinería. Queremos que usted hable con sus vecinos y amigos sobre usar menos pesticidas en sus jardines. Esta campaña incluye organizaciones comunitarias, ciudades, condados, organizaciones que manejan cuencas de agua y distritos de cuencas.

¿Qué deberá hacer usted?

Se requerirá que los Defensores del Agua participen en:

• Un entrenamiento online de 50 minutos. El entrenamiento incluirá:
  • Impactos de pesticidas químicos en la salud humana y calidad del agua
  • Cómo manejar malezas y pestes comunes en el hogar y jardín con alternativas no-tóxicas
• Después de ver el video de entrenamiento, debe completar esta breve encuesta
• Durante el mes posterior al entrenamiento, se espera que los Defensores del Agua hagan contacto con 10 miembros de la comunidad a través de puerta a puerta, participación en juntas comunitarias o eventos:
  • Charle con vecinos y amigos acerca de lo que usted aprendió sobre los daños de pesticidas y sobre alternativas más seguras
  • Comparta los recursos que enseñan cómo reducir/eliminar el uso de pesticidas, además de regalar materiales de NCAP
  • Solicite a la comunidad que hagan el Compromiso Sin Pesticidas (“Pesticide-Free Pledge”) y que se registren para recibir emails de NCAP

¿Qué obtendrá usted?

Aquellos que completen el alcance comunitario durante el mes posterior del entrenamiento con 5+ miembros de la comunidad recibirán una gift card de $25 de su elección para Starbucks, Fred Meyer, Speedway Gas, Chipotle, Petco o Dominos Pizza. Los Administradores del Agua además recibirán una camiseta de NCAP o un gorro.
