Learn the Basics in Creating a Pollinator Garden, Colleen Lockovitch, Sustinea Design

Learn how to create a pollinator garden or build upon what you already have. Site preparation, plant selection for nectar and pollen, maintenance, native bee nesting habits and more will be covered.

Colleen's passion is urban and sustainable gardening with a focus on native and responsible plants. She has worked throughout the United States and abroad and brings much practical experience to her projects. At Sustinea LLC she focuses on creating and maintaining natural, creative and functional spaces. 

Bee Health and Pesticides – What’s the Link? Sharon Selvaggio, Northwest Center for Alternatives to Pesticides

Learn about common garden pesticides toxic to bees and alternative pest management principles and techniques.

Sharon is the Healthy Wildlife and Water Program Director for NCAP, a nonprofit dedicated to ecologically sound alternatives to pesticides. Sharon is assisting the City of Wilsonville in developing its Integrated Pest Management plan, and has organized trainings for commercial nursery staff to learn biocontrol techniques as alternatives to pesticides.

Getting to Know Native Pollinators and What They Need, Matthew Shepherd, The Xerces Society

Matthew Shepherd of the Xerces Society will talk about the natural history, conservation, and habitat needs of native bees, and introduce you to some of the bees that you are most likely to encounter.

In the past 18 years, Matthew has collaborated with people from all walks of life to promote awareness about and protection of pollinators, especially native bees. Matthew is author of numerous articles and books, including Attracting Native Pollinators (Storey Publishing, 2011) and Gardening for Butterflies (Timber Press, 2016). He is now the Xerces Society’s Communications Director.

Start Your Own Mason Bee Colony, John Edwards, Ruhl Bees

Learn about supporting non-stinging mason bees in your own yard, even if you have a small yard or live in an apartment!

John Edwards has authored several field guides on beekeeping, and keeps apiaries on the west and east side of the Cascade mountains.  Edwards is a part owner of Brushy Mountain Bee farm, and you can often find him at the Wilsonville facility of Brushy Mountain Bee Farm talking about bees.

City of Wilsonville Bee City USA and Neighbor Toolkit, Kerry Rappold, City of Wilsonville

The City of Wilsonville supports pollinators! Learn about the City’s new Neighbor Toolkit and other projects being undertaken by the City to help pollinators.

Kerry is the Natural Resources Manager for the City of Wilsonville. Kerry was instrumental in starting the Bee Stewards Wilsonville program and Wilsonville's Bee City USA affiliation. Kerry is helping create pollinator habitat on city property, develop a city Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plan and provide education for Wilsonville residents.

Crest Pollinator Garden and Tour, Bob Carlson, West Linn-Wilsonville School District , CREST and Student Helpers

Bob and students will lead a walk around the CREST property, showing specific pollinator plants.

Bob Carlson is a teacher on special assignment as Director of CREST, specializing in STEM education. He provides field experiences, student research opportunities, primary science curriculum assistance and farm to school programs for teachers and K-12 students in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District.
