NCAP's 2023-2024 Pesticide Drift Project Marks Success in Central Washington

In the 2023-2024 grant cycle, the Northwest Center for Alternatives to Pesticides has made significant strides in our pesticide drift awareness project, thanks to funding from Northwest Fund for the Environment. This initiative focused on Central Washington, highlighting the critical connection between farmworker health and environmental sustainability.

Key Achievements

  1. Reaching Out to the Community: NCAP distributed 88 comprehensive packets about pesticide drift to healthcare workers and community advocates. These packets covered both the health impacts on people and the environmental concerns related to pesticide drift.
  2. Engaging with the Community: One of the highlights was NCAP's participation in the 2023 Healthy Latina Symposium in Granger, WA. They handed out 30 resource packets that showed how they're tackling pesticide drift awareness from multiple angles.
  3. Building Strong Community Ties: NCAP strengthened its partnerships with organizations like Radio La Ley and Yakima Valley Farmworkers Clinic. They also gave out 20 Spanish-language resource packets that addressed both health and environmental impacts of pesticide drift.
  4. Training Workshops: The organization held workshops that combined human health and environmental concerns. This led to six community health workers getting certified in both areas.
  5. Staying Involved: NCAP remained actively involved in WA Farmworker Health Coalition calls, solidifying its role in the community.

Looking Forward

With renewed NWFE funding for 2025, NCAP is building on the strong foundation it established during the 2023-2024 grant cycle. Their "Pláticas Participativas" workshops have proven effective in creating spaces for farmworkers to discuss health and environmental concerns related to pesticide exposure. This shows NCAP's commitment to finding holistic solutions that involve the community. This completed grant cycle has further established NCAP as a trusted resource in the agricultural communities it serves, making lasting impacts through its focus on protecting farmworker health and environmental sustainability. The organization is excited to continue this successful work in its next funding cycle.
